The Ultimate DIY Fly Trap That Actually Works

If you’re dealing with an overwhelming number of flies this season, you’re not alone. The fly problem this year has been worse than ever, and it called for bringing back one of the most effective homemade solutions I’ve ever used. I originally shared this fly trap back in 2015, and since then, it’s been a go-to fix every summer. Best of all? It’s simple to make with ingredients you already have at home—and yes, it actually works.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup sugar

  • 1/4 cup vinegar

  • 1/2 cup hot water

  • 1 tsp salt

Instructions:

  1. Mix all ingredients until dissolved.

  2. Pour the mixture into the bottom of a plastic bottle.

  3. Cut the top (funnel part) of the bottle off.

  4. Invert it and place it inside the bottom half to form a funnel.

  5. (Optional) Poke a few holes around the top to allow scent to escape.

  6. Set it outside where flies are a problem.

Why it works:

The sweet vinegar solution attracts flies, and once they go in through the funnel, they can’t find their way back out. The salt preserves the liquid and slows decay.

Whether you’re dealing with flies on the patio, in the backyard, or near your trash bins, this DIY trap is a game-changer. It’s affordable, chemical-free, and incredibly effective. Give it a try—you’ll be surprised how quickly it starts working. Sometimes, the simplest solutions are the best.
