Baking time: 25 minutes
Total time: 55 minutes

Servings: Makes approximately 10–12 rolls.

Ingredients

Pastry:

  • 2 sheets of puff pastry (thawed)

Filling:

  • 500g ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup grated cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or a mix)

To Assemble:

  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Filling

  1. Heat a skillet over medium heat and add the ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon.
  2. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté for 3–4 minutes until the onion becomes translucent.
  3. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, dried oregano, dried thyme, salt, and black pepper. Mix well to combine, and cook for another 2–3 minutes.
  4. Remove the skillet from heat and let the mixture cool for about 10 minutes. Once cooled, stir in the grated cheese.

Step 2: Prepare the Pastry

  1. Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Roll out the puff pastry sheets on a floured surface. Cut each sheet into rectangles, approximately 4×6 inches (or desired size).

Step 3: Fill and Roll

  1. Spoon 2–3 tablespoons of the beef and cheese mixture onto one end of each pastry rectangle.
  2. Roll the pastry tightly over the filling, sealing the edges by pressing them gently with your fingers or a fork. Place each roll seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet.

Step 4: Egg Wash and Bake

  1. Brush the top of each pastry roll with the beaten egg to achieve a golden, glossy finish.
  2. Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 20–25 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown.

Step 5: Serve

Allow the rolls to cool slightly before serving. They can be enjoyed on their own or paired with a dipping sauce such as marinara, ranch, or a tangy mustard sauce.

Tips for Success

  • Ensure the puff pastry remains cold while working with it to maintain its flakiness. If it becomes too soft, chill it in the refrigerator for 5–10 minutes.
  • You can customize the filling by adding vegetables like finely diced bell peppers, mushrooms, or spinach for extra flavor.
  • For added crunch, sprinkle sesame seeds or poppy seeds on top of the rolls before baking.

These savory meat-filled pastry rolls are a wonderful addition to your recipe collection. Their buttery, flaky pastry combined with the rich, cheesy beef filling makes them a hit at any gathering or family meal. They’re simple to prepare, delicious to taste, and endlessly adaptable to suit your preferences.
