Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy

Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy

Ingredients:

For the Salisbury Steaks:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons oil (for frying)

For the Onion Gravy:

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Steaks:
    • In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
    • Mix until well combined, then form into patties (about 4-6 patties depending on size).
  2. Cook the Steaks:
    • Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook until browned on both sides (about 4-5 minutes per side). Remove from skillet and set aside.
  3. Make the Gravy:
    • In the same skillet, add butter and onions. Cook until onions are soft and golden brown.
    • Add garlic and cook for another minute.
    • Stir in flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
    • Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Bring to a simmer.
    • Season with salt and pepper to taste. Let the gravy thicken slightly.
  4. Combine:
    • Return the patties to the skillet, spooning some gravy over each.
    • Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
  5. Serve:
    • Serve hot with mashed potatoes and vegetables, such as asparagus, on the side.
