APRIL’S PINK MOON — THE SMALLEST FULL MOON OF 2025

Don’t let the name fool you — the Pink Moon isn’t actually pink! But it’s still one of the most magical full moons of the year.

What Is the Pink Moon?
The Pink Moon is the traditional name for the full moon in April, and it’s inspired by the early spring blooms of a wildflower called Phlox subulata, which has a vibrant pink color and grows across North America. While the moon itself doesn’t turn pink, its name signals the changing of seasons and nature’s renewal.

Why Is This Year’s Pink Moon Special?
In 2025, the Pink Moon will occur on the night of April 12–13, and it will be the smallest full moon of the year! This happens because the moon will be at or near its apogee, the point in its orbit farthest from Earth. This makes the moon appear slightly smaller and dimmer in the night sky — a fun contrast to the larger-than-life supermoons we often hear about.

When to See It in the U.S.:
• Peak Illumination: Friday, April 12 at 8:22 p.m. EDT
• Best viewed just after moonrise in your local time zone.

How to Make the Most of It:
• Find a dark spot away from city lights for the best view.
• The moon will appear larger near the horizon and may take on a soft orange or pinkish hue due to the atmosphere.
• Bring a pair of binoculars or a telescope to catch surface details — or just enjoy it with your eyes and a cozy blanket!

Whether you’re moon-gazing solo or sharing the moment with friends, take a minute to pause, reflect, and appreciate the beauty of the night sky.
