Here’s a basic recipe for a Sponge Cake
Ingredients:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup milk (optional for added moisture)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- A pinch of salt
- 1/4 cup melted butter (optional for added richness)
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13-inch cake pan.
- Mix dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
- Beat the eggs and sugar: In a large bowl, beat the eggs with the sugar using an electric mixer on high speed for about 5-6 minutes, or until the mixture is light, fluffy, and pale in color.
- Add vanilla and milk (optional): Stir in the vanilla extract and, if desired, the milk for added moisture.
- Fold in dry ingredients: Gently fold the dry ingredients into the egg mixture in small batches, being careful not to overmix.
- Optional butter: If you’re adding melted butter for a richer flavor, gently fold it into the batter at this point.
- Bake: Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top. Bake for about 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Cool and serve: Let the cake cool completely in the pan before cutting and serving. You can serve the cake as is, with a dusting of powdered sugar, or with whipped cream or fruit.
