Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy
Ingredients:
For the Salisbury Steaks:
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons oil (for frying)
For the Onion Gravy:
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
- Prepare the Steaks:
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
- Mix until well combined, then form into patties (about 4-6 patties depending on size).
- Cook the Steaks:
- Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook until browned on both sides (about 4-5 minutes per side). Remove from skillet and set aside.
- Make the Gravy:
- In the same skillet, add butter and onions. Cook until onions are soft and golden brown.
- Add garlic and cook for another minute.
- Stir in flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
- Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Bring to a simmer.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste. Let the gravy thicken slightly.
- Combine:
- Return the patties to the skillet, spooning some gravy over each.
- Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
- Serve:
- Serve hot with mashed potatoes and vegetables, such as asparagus, on the side.
